Q. What are the advantages of optical fibers in communication systems ?
:- Optical fibres offer some important advantages over wires :
1. Light travels faster in glass than electrical signals in the conventional metallic wires.
2. By using monochromatic light (say lasers), the signal distortion is low.
3. Optical fibres have a high band width ( and hence data carrying capacity ) of the order of GHZ.
4. Optical fibres can carry 100 million times more information and 100 times faster than telephone lines.
5. Optical fibres are very light in weight, easily twistable and have a low attenuation i.e. 0.5 decibels ( kilometers ) which is approximately 10 times less than telephone cables.
